Hello Michael, welcome home.

Good day fellow OHPVer’s

You touch on a couple of things that went through my learning process on the Ring of Fire. Unlike the Team RAO thing were you go like hell for your pull and get back into the van, solo Ring of Fire (and solo ultra events) are slow burn. Everyone except the experienced riders went out fast (including me), up that big hill outside of Maupin, and all the subsequent hills on the way to Mt. Hood. It was not’t until ½ way through my first loop that Kenneth Philbrick passed me. Going out hard on the hills cost me when it was time to go fast on the shorter loop. My knee was killing me. Lesson learned. I am glad you had the long brevet experience to not make the same mistake. Another thing you touched on is that in an event of this magnitude all of the finishers are truly amazing. I was humbled by the racers I saw at the 12 hour. When I was done, most were still going for the 24 hour race. Talk about drive. Your race had even more of that drive, especially for those at the back of the pack that finished! It’s more of a personal goal or achievement I suppose.

Congrats and Kudos again.

John.
