I guess I gotta put in my annual plug for the Barlow Trail Century on June
25th. This is, quite simply, the best supported ride that I've ever done,
both in terms of support AND the ride. The roads and scenery are
absolutely first rate. The food is amazing: fresh fruit, Grand Central
Bakery bread -- none of the generic Costco stuff you get on some other
rides. Free Laughing Planet burrito, beer, and band at the end.

You start out at Cedarville park on the Springwater Corridor, and go out
to Orient. There you get on Dodge Park Blvd and go down to Dodge Park on
roads that remind me of nothing so much as the gorge scenic highway. Then
it's up to Roslyn Lake (and the first rest stop), and over the Devil's
Backbone and through Marmot on charming rural roads -- pastures and
forests with the occasional sweeping vista. Coming off the backbone, you
come sailing down through Little Switzerland and you'd swear you were in
some alpine valley. Following that is a gently rolling stretch up to Lolo
Pass road on beautiful pavement through the woods north of highway 26.
There's a feed stop at the base of Lolo Pass road, and you could turn
around after eating your fill and still call it a great 80 mile ride when
you got back. If you've got a granny and the time, though, the highlight
is the climb up to the top of the pass. An empty, paved road (forest
service road 1828) that winds up through deep forest. You never know when
you'll come around a bend and get a view of the mountain that will take
your breath away. There's another feed stop at the top, and then, of
course, the descent on forest service road 18! Then you retrace your
steps back to Roslyn Lake, and then it's back to the start via Boring.

The only drawbacks:
1.) It's pretty much an out-and-back, but the scenery is so spectacular,
you won't mind.
2.) It's kind of expensive: $35 until 6/11, and $40 after. But at least
it's a fundraiser ride -- all proceeds go to b.i.k.e. And you definitely
get your money's worth. I say that as someone who doesn't like to pay for
rides.

I swear I'm not on the take! I just love this ride! Hope you can make
it.
