Michael,

You'd never make it in Qatar on a recumbent. <grin> Just about everyone toots and waves at me. But when I'm here, yup, me feels like you duz.

  Subject: [OHPV-list] Large Horns

One more note regarding the ride this weekend: while I was on the scenic highway along the Sandy River, a car passed me and honked. The person in the car was someone I know. I know this person was just trying to be friendly, but I would like to say, the next time you're in a car and have the urge to honk at a cyclist, even if you're just being friendly: don't. Horns are made to be heard by people inside other cars. They are overwhelming on a bike. It's at least startling, if not life-threatening, to have one blast at you when you're trying to navigate between obstacles and cars and the edge of a road. And, as someone who rides his bike every day in traffic, a horn that's trying to say "Hi there!" sounds exactly the same to me as a horn hit by some half-evolved cretin trying to say "Git off the f***in' road!"

Only hit that thing if you have a legitimate need to get the cyclist's attention, like a life-or-death situation. Thank you.

  -Michael
