Very interesting! I had the same thing happen to me on the highracer while climbing up past OHSU. I was going slow grinding up the hill and "ping". I was suddenly rolling backwards AND my chin unraveled and fell to the pavement in a large greasy ball. It was definitely a "well that's just great" moment. I have only broken a chain one other time, and that was 12 years ago. I am sure the chains was spliced together using the quicklinks. I think someone mentioned to me a while back that splicing two chains without the quick link makes the point weaker. Shimano even says to replace the pin if you do splice to chains together. Any body have any advice splicing chains?

The key to having bulk is that I can change the housing down by the rear derailleur whenever I please. During the winter I usually change that small guy about 3 or 4 times. When the shifting gets bad, swap it for a new one and clean the cable, and shifting is good again! The rest of the housing is a once a year deal for me. Bulk is the only way to go.
