Thank you both very much - now I have some data points to work with!

FWIW, my chain broke on the way to work this morning. Don't know what
was cause and what was effect, but I presume this relates to the
shifting problems. Walked the bike up the hill into campus (it broke
just as I was leaving Barbur, happily) so the problem was deferred
until after the work day. In theory, I have what I need to get going
again (chain tool and a repair link) barring collateral damage.

Will see what Performance and Bike Gallery have in the cable housing
line on the way home. (List to be expanded if other damage is
discovered.)
