Hey Michael,
I second your recommendation for Brevets for all the same reasons you mentioned. Its a fun and affordable way to share a predetermined ride with a group of enthusiastic experienced riders.
I was very surprised to see how many randoneers shows up on high end race bikes and it was also great to see the all weather fendered with lights bikes also.
Dry Roads,
rand

Subject: [OHPV-list] Champoeg/Canby
Hey OHPV'ers!
This message is kinda for Bruce and Bill down in Canby, but it might be of interest to anyone who shows up for the fun web rides they lead down on French Prairie, in their neck of the woods.
I got a chance to do a 150k brevet this last weekend, and it was a blast. All the things I like about riding organized centuries (pre-mapped courses, good company, cooperation/drafting (unlike ultra races, for instance)) and none of the things I dislike (It was free! I didn't have to pay for Costco muffins I didn't want anyway!) If you're interested in distance riding, hook up with the Oregon Randonneurs. Good fun.
Anyway, the route went by Champoeg, and then east. It did the drop down to Butteville that everyone who has ridden the Wheelmen's Spring Century is familiar with. But instead of going up the hill on the other side, it kept going along the river on Butteville Road. So I thought that I would propose this alternative route for the next time we join Bruce and Bill for a ride over to St. Paul for coconut cream pie -- it's a couple miles longer, but more scenic and more peaceful than that stretch of Arndt Road. Just an idea.
