Greetings OHPV'ers,

HUMAN POWER CHALLENGE UPDATES AND NEWS

Have you checked out the www.ohpv.org/PIR/index.htm site lately ? There are several additions to the site which you may not be aware of and will probably find informative and hopefully inspirational ! Be advised, you'll want to read all the way to the end of this message !

a.. New this year - Pre-registration for the event has been incorporated into the registration process ! We have contracted with an online registration service and have also constructed a downloadable registration form that a person can hand fill out and snail mail in . Both have instructional details on how to complete either process, and word has it that the online service is a breeze . We will of course offer same day registration, but please note that pre-registration affords you a $5 discount and a complimentary raffle ticket. Take advantage of it !
b.. What are we racing for ? - Same 'ole thing , glory, kudos galore, the personal gratification of testing yourself, and as a little material incentive ,,,, moola ! Really ? Cold hard cash ? Yep. Through the generous donations of several sponsors, the PIR HPC now offers cash prizes ( well, checks actually, Edna says they're good ),to all class categories in both men's and women's divisions. As a bonus incentive, there is a women's division specific cash award being offered ( go gals ! ), and a way cool "rush"of rewarding the 200 meter sprint champions ( in all classes ), in the following manner ; the numerical value of mph = the numerical amount of $, ie, 33.25 mph = $33.25 . Therefore, if you must win, win big ! And to further add motivation, the top 3 finishers in all classes with an Easy Racer bike under their chamois, gets bonus $ from the Gardner Martin fund ! In other words, you don't have to place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the race, just be the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person across the line on an Easy Racer bike ! Please click onto the sponsor page to find out to whom we are indebted too for their sincerely honored and appreciated donations. These folks deserve our thanks and our patronage.
( We have thought about simply handing out money to everyone who walks up and registers,,, but we figured you might at least go ride your recumbent around the track a couple of times first,,, sheesh ! )

a.. More race rewards - Product raffles and product awards will also be offered to racers and spectators alike. A " furthest travelled " race participant prize and an " Involvement " award will be handed out. " Involvement " ? Is that mysterious or what ? Get there and find out ! And these are nice goodies too !
b.. Update on the auto cross race - We've stretched out the auto x event by lengthening and broadening the entire course to facilitate harder accelerations with higher speeds down the straight sections, while utilizing several medium speed turns to capture a " Le Mans " type of feel to the race. Races will be conducted in heats according to class, with half a dozen or less riders at one time on the course ( to insure safer riding conditions ). Placement finishers move on to the next heat. Please note this is a fun event ! We stress safety and respect for all riders,, ride hard but ride safe ! This race is just for kudos and fun,, no $ awarded for this event.
c.. Racer news - We are making a concerted effort to encourage every single member of the OHPV, ERRC, and all the locals, to come out and have a great time either racing or mingling with fellow benters. What an incredible opportunity to meet with old acquaintances and make new friends, and possibly new riding buddies. Word has been sent out in a mulitude of media, from print to the cyber world, hopefully to entice more participants from such far and exotic lands like ,,,, Washington,, California,, and beyond ! We are seeing a slew of returning and new riders making the journey to Portland this year, deepening the fields of competition and comradery. Speaking of which, the streamliner divisions are gaining momentum this year, including the return of several Varna clones, the Steve Delaire/Rotator clan, wild Joe K, and others. New to the event is an armada of ASME engineering students with their HPV projects, back fresh from the west coast ASME championships. Welcome teams, we can't wait to see your creations ! AND , for fans of racing lore, Fast Freddy Markham ( world record setter , too numerous to list ),will return to PIR to burn up the track once again ! Here's your shot to race with a guy who is a racing legend and current official American fastest HPV. He says he'll bring the new carbon fiber Gold Rush Easy Racers have been developing lately, and, I hear, the Gold Rush and/or the Le Tour Rush streamliners. Piloting these land rockets will be Fred and his daughter Tanya. We gotta get some go like crazy gals in streamliners to challenge her ! Plus there are a few other unconfirmed world class racers that are, well, unconfirmed at this point. We'll see,,, come on you guys !!
Feel free to email the committee at pirhumanpower at comcast.net for any questions, thoughts, comments, or non-sensical rhetoric you feel is appropriate and/or neccessary . : ) WE WANNA HEAR SOME NOISE !!

the HPC committee,
Dave and Edna VanGundy, Todd Marley, Lonnie Morse, Tomaso Breedlove
