HI everyone,

Well what a magical day at the Lance Armstrong Ride today in Portland at the Nike Campus. Edna, Dave and myself volunteered instead of riding. I was there at 5:00 AM to prepare for the start as part of wave management, it was very chilly at that hour. Dave and Edna were assigned to monitor a street corner off in never never land on the ride. At 1:15 while many of the riders were still out on the course (10, 40, 70 & 100 mile options) guess who walks out to greet us, Lance and then he introduces George Hincapie, but wait it gets better, then Lance introduces Eddie Merckx! Talk about a whose who bicycle convention in action, there wasn't a dry eye in the place and the best part was that these elite riders were all very down to earth and so appreciative of the crowd. Bob Roll of OLN was there also, all contributing their energy to join Lance in the fight against cancer. It was a great day for Portland and a record 1.3 million dollars was raised this year, which is the highest in the nation for a first time city and the ride sold out the available spaces in 28 days. Lance says that Portland is an amazing bicycling community, but we already knew that. Anyone who is looking for something cool to do next year, put this on the calendar if you are able. There probably isn't any of us whose lives haven't been affected by Cancer, be it friends, family or personal experience.
Lots of recumbent riders were seen, Bruce Parker came cruising by as well as many others.

Pat and I are off to Interbike for this next week, we look forward to telling you about all the cool stuff we will see at the next OHPV meeting.

Ciao,

Robert Johnson
