[OHPV-list] Coastdown Testing set for Saturday

Hello Everyone-

The coastdown testing is ON and set for this Saturday 9/24. We will be explaining the plans and soliciting helpers at the OHPV meeting tomorrow night, but here's a summary:

After a lot of scouting (thanks for the ideas, everyone!) the coastdown testing will be done on Hwy 224 about 5 miles outside Estacada, on the new part of the highway that goes up and over the hill past the North Fork Reservoir dam. We'll meet just past the top of the hill at the big pullout/viewpoint on the right. The route is very smooth, and has good takeouts and good visibility. The shoulders are wide and clean, and the traffic is light. There are two lanes going uphill and one down, so vehicles have lots of room to pass. Depending on the wind/weather, we have two different directions to run. Looks to be a fun day!

We'll set up carpools and meet at 9:00 at the viewpoint. The idea is to configure bikes with and without TailSocks and other fairings, then coast down and record the max speed attained in each configuration. Vehicles will be used to haul bikes and riders back up the hill.

TerraCycle would especially like to test representative bikes from Easy Racers, Bacchetta, Rans, Burley, Volae, and Catrike, but we'd like to welcome all kinds of bikes. We'll see how hectic it gets. We want to get useful data, but have fun, too. This should be a good chance to see how different bikes stack up aero wise. I'm hoping this could become a fun annual event.

5. Lookouts
6. Bike reconfiguration tech

8. Riders (of course!)
