Subject: [CycleOregon] Sunday Birthday Ride

I'd like to thank everyone for their birthday wishes! Sunday brought no
rain and great company. A better gift there isn't.

Celebrating with me were Jeff, Linda, Laura, Lynne, Jason, Amy, Kathy &
Kirke (Kathy & Kirke being most visible with their brightly colored
recumbent socks). After a brief pitstop at Lynne's to drop off eggplants
harvested from my garden, we headed over to the 26 bike path. We were
briefly delayed by a small rat, I mean dog, who decided that he wanted to
journey up the bike path with us. His distressed owners ran after him and
we had to encourage the dog to head back down the path towards it's owners.

We rode through the park down Kingston where Kirke & Kathy showed us how to
access a multi-use path at the bottom that left us on 24th Terrace. From
there we cut across town and over to Highway 30. I forgot how long a ride
it is from there to the Sauvie Island Bridge. As Amy remarked, the scenery
along this stretch "does not elevate the soul". Nearly to the bridge, I
received a call from Edna, who was at the destination corn maze, reporting
that is was not open on Sundays. We agreed to meet up at the bridge and
make alternate plans. Once there, it was decided we would go to the other
maze about 2.5 miles from the bridge. Linda peeled off for home.

The farm was PACKED! Hundreds of people milling about, buying pumpkins and
other farm produce, eating elephant ears, caramel apples, corn on the cob,
fajitas and more. The line for the hayrides was very long, and people were
tromping out of the corn maze covered in mud up their knees. OK, the corn
maze was therefore out. (Will have to return next September, before the rain
starts.) So, we spent our time eating instead. :) Meanwhile, Dave, Todd &
several other OHPV riders turned up. Kisses and hugs from Dave. Comments
about my graying hair from Dave. I retorted with a wise remark about his
bald head. :)

Kathy & Kirke decided to do a loop aroung the island, so the 6 remaining
wedgies in the original group set off to find McNamee. The turnoff is just
before the light at Cornelius Pass Rd. McNamee is a gem. Absolutely NO
traffic and very quiet. It's also %^$#ing steep down at the bottom. Amy
started reading off slope "eleven... Tewlve... Do you really want to know
this? " "Yes" I panted. Just before the word "Seventeen" came out of her
mouth, I bailed. Yes, I have no pride, and apparently no fitness either. :(
I pushed my bike up the steepest bit while watching everyone else grind up
and out of sight. Amy graciously waited for me a mile up the road, and then
force-fed me a raspberry sorbet Clif Shot. It tasted awful but it did the
trick. By the time we reached Skyline, I was feeling much better.

We rode Skyline all the way to Cornell, then screamed down the hill as far
as Cedar Hills Blvd. Here the group split up as Jason headed one way, Lynne
& Jeff another, and Amy, Laura & I towards my place. However, the siren
song of Baja Fresh waylaid us soon enough, and a fine hour was spent
re-charging on guacamole.

We ended the day with about 45 miles. And probably a record for the SLOWEST
45 miles ever, since we finally made it back to my house sometime after 4PM!
Now, that's my kind of casual ride. :)
