Hi Guys ~
Yes - I'm going to the annual Pacific Coast CO training ride. I'm out of
"winter" shape and need the trianing ;-)
Where is the OHPV meeting going to be held ? ?
If Mo is tired of hosting - I'll volunteer my place this time. I would hate
to wear out the welcome at Home Style Coffee House.
I must say that Battle Mt. really did get the juices going. It's always
better to see the fabrications of World Class Racers first hand and
understand the reasons for their designs and the little details. A whole lot
of my questions and reasons for, were answered by being there. Todd and I
both were seduced by the Graceful Beauty of a Serious World Class Racing
Machine. After seeing the first 70 mph Varna quietly slip thru the traps I
became gun ho about building another Varna for Battle MT. I could see it in
Todds eye's also - ONLY - After a couple of sleepless nights did I return to
my original plan of campaigning my Varna in every available Time Trail that
is safe to race on. I simply cannot justify a twice a year use machine when
I can have a similarilarly fast Varna being used three times a month in race
season. Now - I didn't say that I wasn't going to battle Mt. next year. The
qualifying speed is certainly achievable in my Varna as is. Like Fred
Markham said to me at the awards banquet. If you have a Varna your already a
contender. Todd and I feel we now know the difference between fast Varnas
and sub 60 mph Varnas "other than the motor" Sorry "racers secret" if we
told ya we would have ta kill ya" :-)) It's our secret reward for being
there, watching, comparing, and seeing the too obvious.
Many fabricative methods have been brought back from Battle Mt. These
techniques are currently being used on the world class racers. I will be
making the much needed wheel fairings soon as I can find a window of time to
do so. Feb. is not far off for the Jack Frost TT. - by then my Varna should
be a self starter and a much faster racer with the addition of wheel
fairings, new tail and the newly acquired Zephyr lowracer snug inside. I
really can't wait. It's all I can do to not go to the garage and work on it
until done - but I have a new business to get launched so the next few
months are crunch time for me - so what else is new :-))
High points for Battle Mountain for me:
Meeting the people/owners/builders personally that I read about so much on
the web.
Seeing their machines actually disasembled and rebuilt - somtimes daily.
Observing the comradery of the competeors giving a hand to other racers in
need of crash repair.
Also seeing the builders scouting out what the competetion is doing - that
was fun to stand back and watch.
Witnessing the 70 + mph speeds. It's simply - - - well - - - I can't
describe it !
Understanding that air density rules when world records are set..
The road race was a hoot to watch - very challenging - more dangerous than
the 200 meter "my opinion"
Down points:
Not having Tom Breedlove there with us because of a serious bike accident.
He was missed terribly.
Watching the IHPVA and HPVA trying to get along - interesting ?
I feel blessed that we "in the NW" have such a solid organization without
the destruction of politics. Hopefully we can stay that way for a fun
future.
More info at the OHPV meeting.
later ~
