[OHPV-list] Wheel building seminar: November 19th

A couple people snuck up behind me and twisted my arm, so... yes! I'd be
HAPPY to give a wheelbuilding class.

Actually, I've been wanting to do this for some time. What I've got planned
is a "hands-on" session, where as many people as possible leave with an
intact, ready-to-ride bicycle wheel they've built with their own hands. I've
found that *watching* wheels being built is pretty dull, but actually
getting in and doing it is both difficult and soothing at the same time.

So: here's the plan. We'll get together after the RARE ride on Saturday,
November 19th at about 3PM at a place to be determined- possibly Terracycle
or Lonnie Morse's house. We'll all bring the necessary parts and tools, and
I'll teach you my method for building long-lasting bicycle wheels. Along the
way, we'll also discuss the plusses and minuses of different spoke patterns,
materials, and tools.

At a minimum, you'll need:
a rim
a hub
a collection of spokes
a spoke wrench
a truing stand

Expect to spend several hours- my methods are reliable, but not fast. We'll
also have a few breaks while I jabber and draw pictures.

My intent in making this announcement 6 weeks ahead of time is to allow
people time to gather the necessary parts- I'll be happy to find sources for
odd-size rims or spokes. If you know which rim and hub you'll have, I can
figure out spoke lengths.

I know Lonnie, Todd, and Kirke were interested in this- who else wants to
get their hands dirty?

Jeff
