Hiya!
Diane and I took Monday off for a final reconnaissance of the roads from
Astoria to Seaside and everywhere in between. We also repainted the "Dan
Henry's", so it'll be pretty tough to get lost.
Deb Stout emailed me about construction by the traffic circle in Astoria,
on the "Porker Ride" route, but it shouldn't be a big deal. We'll be going
through there at about 10AM on Saturday- I can't recall seeing much traffic
there in previous years. The traffic in beautiful downtown Seaside will
probably be the worse problem.
There's a newly constructed island where the rides heading towards Fort
Clatsop cross Highway 101 on Business 101. I can understand why it's been
put there, but it "blocks" the direct route going east & west. There's lots
of road development being put in, so I'm wondering whether this will be a
viable route in the future. For now, we can get across fine- the edges of
the island are tapered and it could be ridden over, but most riders will
want to stop, lift, & heave. It's not particularly dangerous (compared to
the previous intersection design), but it makes the crossing kind of
confusing. It'll be a "talking point" at the start of the rides.
There are sections along 101 are looking narrower every time I look at
them. I wish we had access to the back roads west of 101, but that's an
issue we'll face another day. Fort Clatsop Loop, Logan Road, and Lewis &
Clark Road are in excellent shape, aside from a couple new clear-cuts by the
road.
See you there!
Jeff
